Jon Morgan former CEO of Disability Sport Wales awarded OBE in New Years Honour List

Disability Sport Wales former Chief Executive Jon Morgan has been awarded an OBE for his services to disability sport in Wales.

Jon stepped down from the organisation after a very successful fifteen years in post at the end of June 2017.

Since Jon’s appointment in 2002, grassroots participation opportunities increased across Wales from 1200 to over 1.4 million per year by 2016.  At the same time the number of clubs increased from 31 to over 400, with over 22,000 disabled members supported by a workforce of over 7000 coaches and volunteers.

Over the same period Wales enjoyed unprecedented success within international sport delivering more medals and athletes than ever before at European, World Championships and Paralympic games. The nation hosted the most successful ever International Paralympic Athletics European Championships, Swansea 2014 as well as contributing to recent Team Wales success at the Melbourne, Delhi and Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Jon said ‘It is an honour to receive an OBE and at the same time very humbling. It has been a privilege to have led Disability Sport Wales and to witness the impact that the organisation has had on the lives of so many people across Wales.

I have been constantly amazed by the drive and determination of the team at Disability Sport Wales and the many thousands of volunteers who have been involved in our programmes. They are the real heroes behind this story and I am so very proud to accept this honour on their behalf and in recognition of the amazing work that they do.

I would also like to extend my thanks to my colleagues and the sports organisations across the Sector who have all made their own contribution to the success of disability sport in Wales. As a nation we can feel rightly proud of the transformation that has been achieved.

Finally, I would like to thank my family who have supported me throughout my time at Disability Sport Wales and in-particular my late father George who inspired me to follow a career in sport’.

Jon remains in position as Vice-Chair of Commonwealth Games Wales and as a board member for the Welsh Sports Association. Jon also continues his role as a board member for BISFed, the World Governing Body for the Paralympic sport of boccia. Away from sport, Jon serves as a Trustee for the Friends of Stepping Stones, a Swansea based charity supporting pre-school aged disabled children.

Gareth John, President of Disability Sport Wales said: “I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Jon on being recognised in the New Year’s Honours List with the award of an OBE for his contribution to disability sport over the last 15 years in Wales. His hard work has not only led to us being able to offer amazing opportunities within disability sport, but his vision has directly led to greater inclusion within sport and active recreation in Wales more widely – a legacy to be very proud of.”

‘’Some people might not know that Jon actually started working on disability sport programmes in the late ‘80s as a Sports Development Officer for the former Rhymney Valley District Council before joining Sport Wales in 1995 where once again he led the appointment and management of the first ever dedicated Welsh sports development officer working with disability sport. I know that Jon was also very proud to be a board member for the British Paralympic Association from 2005-2013’’

“It has been a real privilege to work alongside him and I am sure that he will continue to add his wealth of knowledge and experience to sport in Wales, the UK and at an international level. He continues to share our commitment to empower people and organisations to transform lives through the power of sport and I am sure he will continue to add insight to the sector in the years ahead. I know that everyone in Disability Sport Wales joins me in sending our congratulations.”
